Ryan Newman led the way in the opening practice for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a fast lap of 29.509 seconds.
The Indiana driver ran 16 laps in practice, and posted the fast lap of the session on his last lap.
Jamie McMurray, who was involved in a few crashes last weekend at Daytona International Speedway was second followed by Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
Kyle Larson was sixth with Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex, Jr. rounding out the top-10.
Daytona 500 winner Kurt Busch was 14th in practice, while Jimmie Johnson, the driver who has won the last two Atlanta races, was 21st.
